The recent announcement that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and plans to relocate the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem may spark protests, some of which have the potential to become violent. U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur reminds U.S. citizens of the need for caution and awareness of personal security.
Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news for updates. Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities. Avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur advises that a large planned demonstration will take place in front of the U.S. Embassy on Friday, December 8, 2017. The demonstration may start as early as 11:00 AM and is anticipated to last through the afternoon.
Current estimates place the crowd at a minimum of 1000 persons. Police presence will be significantly increased outside our perimeter prior to and during the event. While we anticipate the demonstration will be peaceful, the Embassy will close to the public at 12:00 PM.
Please remember that local law prohibits non-Malaysians from participating in public demonstrations.
