Security Message for U.S Citizens

Planned Demonstration Friday, July 1, 2016 at U.S. Embassy, Kuala Lumpur

The U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has learned that a demonstration is planned at or in the vicinity of the Embassy on Friday, July 1, 2016, beginning at aproximately 2:00PM.  Traffic in the area of the Embassy will likely be disrupted, a police presence is expected.  U.S. citizens should avoid the area around the Embassy on Friday afternoon.

The organizers have announced that the demonstration will begin at the Menara Tabung Haji, located several hundred yards north of the U.S. Embassy on Jalan Tun Razak, and then will proceed south towards the U.S. Embassy.  It is not known how long the demonstrators will remain at the Embassy.

Local law prohibits non-Malaysians from participating in public protests.  Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

The U.S. Embassy will close for all routine, non-scheduled consular services at 2:00PM on Friday, July 1, 2016.  Emergency consular services for U.S. citizens will continue to be available.
