Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Planned Demonstration

Planned Demonstration Friday, July 15, 2016 at U.S. Embassy, Kuala Lumpur

The U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has learned that a demonstration is  planned in front of the Embassy of Burma on Friday, July 15, 2016 beginning at approximately 2:00PM.  Traffic in the area of the Embassy of Burma will likely be disrupted; a police presence is expected.  U.S. citizens should avoid that area on Friday afternoon.

Demonstrators are expected to march from Menara Tabung Haji on Jalan Tun Razak to the Embassy of Burma via Jalan Ampang.

Local law prohibits non-Malaysians from participating in public protests.  Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Emergency consular services for U.S. citizens will continue to be available.
