Weather Alert: U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Location: Selangor, Genting Highlands, Batang Kali; Heavy rain and landslide
Event: On December 16, 2022, a large landslide struck a campground on Jalan Batang Kali in the Genting Highlands, 30 miles north of Kuala Lumpur. At least twelve deaths have been reported and dozens are reported missing. There are no reports of U.S. citizens being affected. The road from Batang Kali to Genting Highlands Resort is blocked but alternative routes remain open. More information on road conditions may is available from the Malaysian National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA). U.S. citizens should be aware that during periods of sustained heavy rainfall, the potential remains for more landslides throughout Malaysia.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid travel to the area of Batang Kali until rescue and cleanup efforts are completed.
- Monitor the local news for urgent weather updates.
