U.S. and Malaysian leaders met August 27 in Washington, D.C. for Malaysia-U.S. Strategic Talks. The delegations, led by Dr. Amy Searight, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for South and Southeast Asia, and Suriani binti Ahmad, Ministry of Defense Under Secretary for Policy and Strategic Planning, discussed cooperation on security, maritime, and military science and technology issues. These annual talks, held for the sixth year, are an example of the continuing and growing relationship between the U.S. and Malaysia.
Discussion included a review of existing U.S.-Malaysian military collaboration, including joint military exercises such as the Malaysia–United States Amphibious Exercise, held August 25-September 2, 2014 – the first joint amphibious military exercise held in Malaysia. The Malaysian also delegation visited the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory to learn about U.S. military research priorities and explore possible future collaboration.
