Planned Demonstration on Friday, August 15, 2014

The U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has learned from social media that a group of protestors is planning a demonstration in support of Gaza. The protest is scheduled to take place on Friday, August 15, 2014, at 2:00 PM, in front of the U.S. Embassy, 376 Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. It is not known how long the demonstrators will remain at the Embassy. The number of planned demonstrators is expected to be between 150-200 people, but more people could show up on the day of the protest. A police presence is expected, and traffic in the area will likely be disrupted.

The U.S. Embassy will close for consular services at 1:30 PM on Friday, August 15. U.S. citizens should avoid the area around the Embassy. Local law prohibits non-Malaysians from participating in public protests.

The U.S. Embassy is not aware of specific threats to U.S. citizens in Malaysia at this time. You should avoid areas that may be targeted for demonstrations and exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations or large gatherings. You should monitor local media to keep updated with the latest information about demonstrations and areas to avoid.
