While the U.S. Air Force Band of the Asia Pacific (PACAF) was conducting joint military exercises with Malaysian counterparts June 9-22, its four- piece music ensemble led by Captain Haley Armstrong engaged in a series of community relations activities in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.  Presenting renditions of popular American music and songs before Malaysian audiences, they spread messages of happiness and friendship to about 400 members of the public.  Malaysian musicians, including Kuala Lumpur city hall orchestra members and youth, music teachers, and media representatives were among those who attended the band’s excellent performances, featured at:  the Lincoln Corner in the Kuala Lumpur Library (June 12); the U.S. Embassy (June 13); Lincoln Corner in the Penang Public Library (Seberang Jaya; June 17) and KDU College in Penang (Georgetown; June 19).  “Music and songs cut across all borders” said one of the enthusiastic members who attended the band’s Master Class in Penang, adding, “it binds performers and listeners together, as we speak the same inspiring language!”

The U.S. Airforce Band’s two-hour presentations included an hour of Master Class in which band members shared their personal stories which led them toward a career in music and in the U.S. Airforce.  Malaysians enjoyed listening to their heart-warming stories, especially about meeting people from different cultures and walks of life in the countries the band visited and the enthusiastic audiences for whom they played in schools, villages, and town and city halls, all over the Asia Pacific region.

At every stop, members of the audience, especially youth, bonded affectionately with the U.S. Airforce Band members, taking photos and “selfies”, getting autographs, sharing short stories, and hugging each other to express their affection.

The United States Air Force Band is stationed at Yokota Air Base, Japan. The unit consists of full-time professional musicians who strive to inspire both military and civilian audiences in the Western Pacific region of the world.   Under the direction of Captain Haley Armstrong, the US Air Force Band of the Pacific contributes hundreds of musical performances each year to various locations in the Asia/Pacific region, bringing goodwill and friendship to one and all.
