As a precursor to the Global Entrepreneurship Week, PAS hosted Deborah Magid, Director, Software Strategy of IBM’s Venture Capital Group as a target-of-opportunity speaker. The week-long program (October 23 – November 3) included visits by Ms. Magid to Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Kuching and saw her reaching out to close to 500 entrepreneurs, innovators, industry specialist, academicians, government officials, and students. Among the notable programs she conducted was a YSEALI Pitch Night competition and workshop, hosted by the American Corner in Kuala Lumpur, which featured visiting guest judge from Washington, DC Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southeast Asia, W. Patrick Murphy. Throughout her trip, Deborah interacted with local start-ups, providing feedback and insight on their ventures. She also attracted participation from local government partners and private sector players such as IBM, Microsoft, Girls-in-Tech, MaGIC (a Malaysian government agency mandated to promote entrepreneurship), the Sarawak state government and MaGICX, which is modeled after MediaX at Stanford University. Deborah’s program received tremendous media coverage throughout the country and opened up new ways for participants to approach building a viable entrepreneurial ecosystem in Malaysia.
