Chris Abdur-Rahman Blauvelt, Founder and CEO of LaunchGood.com, the world’s largest faith-based crowdfunding platform based in the United States, visited Malaysia from April 1 – 12, 2016 to speak to Malaysian youth on entrepreneurship and crowdfunding. During his visit in Malaysia, he travelled to several states, covering five cities, which included Johor Bahru, Kota Bahru, Penang, Ipoh, and Kuala Lumpur.
For his individual sessions, he shared his personal story on being an American-Muslim convert at the age of 16 and his professional journey of starting LaunchGood.com in 2013. He touched on important values for startups based on lessons he learned throughout his career, and served as an inspiration to the students and entrepreneurs who are just starting out on their own. While in Penang, his session was hosted at the American Corner in Seberang Jaya, and in Kuala Lumpur, the Embassy worked with Crescent Collective to have his talk at the Ruang@IKSB and Khazanah Nasional. Chris Blauvelt managed to reach an audience of nearly 500 Malaysians during his visit.
In addition to delivering talks, Chris conducted a workshop focusing on crowdfunding with students from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor Bahru as part of their Entrepreneurship Day. The same workshop was carried out at the Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Kota Bahru as well. In addition, Chris served as a judge for a Click! Camp, a youth-focused camp funded by the Embassy, supported by Fulbright English Teaching Assistants, and implemented by a USG exchange alumnus, to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship and economic development.
