Capacity building efforts in Sabah by Smithsonian National Zoo

The U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur sponsored a research visit to Sabah by three elephant experts from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.  Elephant research specialist Erin Latimer, Senior Curator Bryan Amaral and Veterinarian Dr. James Steeil visited the Sabah Wildlife Department in Lok Kawi and Sepilok from July 31- Aug 5. Their goal was to improve the ability to diagnose Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) in the current and future population of orphaned Bornean elephant calves and to assess the current elephant residents and advise on treatment, husbandry and training. Three Bornean elephant calves died of EEHV in 2016 at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.
